As part of the International Year of Glaciers, we invite you to discover the inspiring story of Marcela Fernández, an environmental activist and founder of Cumbres Blancas Colombia, as she works tirelessly to protect her country’s rapidly disappearing glaciers. When scientists told Marcela it was already too late to save these ecosystems, she turned to indigenous spirituality and partnerships to search for innovative solutions.
Marcela, who has now expand her grasroots initiative to a global movement called Glacier Nation, was recognized by the BBC in 2023 as one of the 100 most influential women in the world. Her mission focuses on raising awareness of climate change impacts, advocating for glacier protection, and planting native frailejones in Colombia’s páramos.
