John Lennon said, "Reality leaves a lot to the imagination." In fact, with imagination, we create our reality, both external and internal. Externally, imagination enables us to simulate novel thoughts or ideas without any direct external input of senses. Internally, through imagination, we can peep into our unseen psyche, tapping into something more profound.

In this MQ event, we will explore this theme with Becca (from a psychological perspective) and Matt (from a philosophical perspective) by discussing various questions like From where does imagination come? Why do we need the imagination to lead a meaningful life? How can we shapen our imaginative process? In the end, we will do a short workshop on Jung's Active Imagination process with our guest experts.

Becca Tarnas, Ph.D., is a scholar, artist, and editor of Archai: The Journal of Archetypal Cosmology. She received her doctorate in Philosophy and Religion from the California Institute of Integral Studies, with her dissertation titled The Back of Beyond: The Red Books of C. G. Jung and J. R. R. Tolkien. She teaches in the Jungian Psychology and Archetypal Studies program at Pacifica Graduate Institute and is author of the book Journey to the Imaginal Realm: A Reader's Guide to J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.

Matthew T. Segall, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at California Institute of Integral Studies and teaches courses on process-relational thought and German Idealism. He received his doctoral degree from the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness program at CIIS, and his dissertation was titled Cosmotheanthropic Imagination in the Post-Kantian Process Philosophy of Schelling and Whitehead.
